Why One Safety Score Misses Fleet Risk
Dashcams, telematics, ELD and compliance systems can each miss driver risk when fleets review alerts separately instead of tracking patterns over time.

A camera alert can show what happened in one moment. It cannot, by itself, show whether the same driver has a recurring pattern across speed, braking, hours-of-service, roadside inspections and coaching history.
That distinction matters for owner-operators and small fleets because they often have less staff to review safety information. A manager may receive useful signals from a dashcam, telematics portal, electronic logging device, CSA profile and maintenance system, yet still miss the combined pattern. The problem is not a lack of data. It is the absence of one repeatable process for turning separate alerts into a decision.
WHY INDIVIDUAL ALERTS CAN MISLEAD
A harsh-braking alert deserves review, but it is only one event. The driver may have reacted correctly to traffic, or the event may be one part of a larger pattern involving speed, following distance and repeated lane departures. Ranking drivers only by the number of camera alerts can therefore direct attention toward the loudest dashboard instead of the highest total risk.
The same weakness appears when every coaching conversation starts from zero. A driver may be counseled after speeding, then later after a citation, then again after distracted driving. If those conversations are stored as unrelated events, the fleet loses the chance to set one measurable objective and check whether behavior changes over the next 30, 60 or 90 days.
BUILD A DRIVER-RISK TIMELINE
A practical system does not require an expensive control room. Start with one driver record that brings together camera events, telematics, ELD or hours-of-service exceptions, roadside inspections, citations, preventable incidents, tenure, assigned equipment and completed coaching. Review the frequency, severity and circumstances of the signals—not just the count.
This approach is consistent with the American Transportation Research Institute's Crash Predictor Model. The July 21 analysis says the model examined more than 580,000 commercial driver records and found that patterns of driver behavior are among the strongest predictors of future crash involvement. That does not mean a score can predict every event. It means a pattern can deserve action even when the driver never ranks first on a single report.
THREE CHANGES A SMALL FLEET CAN MAKE
- Use one review window. Compare the last 30 to 90 days of safety signals on the same schedule for every driver.
- Coach a behavior, not an alert. Define one objective—such as following distance or speed control—document the conversation and measure the next period against it.
- Escalate by combined risk. A newer driver with several moderate signals may need attention before a veteran who triggered one severe but explainable event.
Artificial intelligence and predictive analytics can help organize large datasets, but fleets should treat their output as decision support, not a verdict. Managers still need to verify the underlying event, account for route and vehicle differences, protect driver data and allow the driver to explain context. A model that cannot show why it raised a flag should not be the only basis for discipline.
DO NOT IGNORE THE TRUCK
Behavioral data also needs a mechanical layer. Repeated hard braking, lane-correction alerts or vibration complaints can involve driving behavior, equipment condition or both. Tires, brakes, steering, suspension, alignment and wheel-end play should be inspected before the fleet assumes the driver is the entire cause.

BOTTOM LINE
The most useful safety question is not, “Which driver triggered the most alerts?” It is, “Which pattern is getting worse, and what action can we verify?” Connect the signals, coach one behavior consistently, inspect the equipment and measure whether the risk changes.
