Trump Announces Tiered Steel Tariff System: 50%, 25% and Zero

The Trump administration is preparing a tiered tariff system for steel and aluminum products. Some will maintain 50%, others drop to 25%, and products with less than 15% metal content will face 0% duties. Direct impact on trucking costs is inevitable.

๐Ÿ’ฐ New Tiered Tariff System: How It Impacts Trucking

The Trump administration is about to announce a tiered tariff system for steel and aluminum products, responding to massive complaints from American companies struggling to calculate the correct duties under the previous scheme.

๐Ÿ“Š The New System in Detail

  • 50% tariff: Maintained for most products in Chapters 72 and 73 of the harmonized tariff schedule (raw steel, steel pipe, direct steel products). The tariff is now calculated on the full value of the imported product, not just the steel content
  • 25% tariff: Applies to derivative products containing steel/aluminum but not pure metal products. Includes certain Chapter 76 items
  • 0% tariff: If the total steel or aluminum content is less than 15% of the product, the tariff drops to zero

๐Ÿš› Direct Impact on Trucking

For the trucking industry, these tariffs have a cascading effect:

  • Trailers and tanks โ€” manufactured primarily with steel and aluminum, will maintain high 50% tariffs
  • Truck parts โ€” suspension components, chassis, axles, and brakes that use steel could see price increases
  • Tires โ€” aluminum rims and steel cables within tires could fall into the 25% bracket
  • Tools and equipment โ€” depending on metal content percentage, could benefit from reduced or zero rates

Shares of Century Aluminum and Alcoa fell more than 1.6% on the news, while Commercial Metals dropped 1.4%.

๐Ÿ’ก What Does This Mean For You?

If you're considering buying a new trailer or making major repairs, parts containing steel are likely to keep getting more expensive. The best time for preventive maintenance is NOW, before increases fully hit the parts market.
