Truck Tariffs: An October 1 Deadline Sets Your 2027 Price

A US content determination lets the tariff hit only the non-US part of a truck. It expires yearly, and the importer files by October 1.

Truck Tariffs: An October 1 Deadline Sets Your 2027 Price

There is a date on the calendar that will help set the sticker price of the truck you buy in 2027, and it is not a sales date. It is October 1. Miss it and the math on that unit changes before you ever walk onto a lot.

The Commerce Department published a notice on August 19 that, on its face, is about automobiles. Read the reasoning and it is about your side of the business too, because the whole point of the change is to line the car rules up with the ones already written for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.

How trucks got their own tariff file

In Proclamation 10984, issued October 17, 2025, the President found that imports of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, their parts, and buses threaten to impair national security, and imposed tariffs on them under section 232. That is a separate action from the automobile tariffs of Proclamation 10908, which came out in March of 2025.

The two were written to work together on purpose. The government's stated reason is the overlap between the part suppliers that serve cars and the ones that serve trucks — the same shop often feeds both lines.

The relief that exists, and who it is for

There is a way to have the extra tariff apply to less than the full value of the vehicle. On February 2, 2026, Commerce set up a process for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles that qualify for preferential treatment under the USMCA: the importer submits documentation identifying how much of the vehicle is U.S. content, and the additional tariff is applied only to the value of the non-U.S. content.

Two limits on that, both in the text. First, eligibility reaches only vehicles imported from Mexico and Canada that actually qualify for USMCA preferential treatment. A unit from anywhere else, or one from Mexico or Canada that does not qualify, is not in this lane at all. Second, the party who submits is the importer, on a model-line basis. You are not filing anything.

Why October 1 is the date to remember

For medium- and heavy-duty vehicles imported after December 31, 2026, an approved U.S. content determination is good for one calendar year. And to get one in time, the importer has to submit the documentation no later than the October 1 before the calendar year of importation begins.

That is the sentence worth carrying. A determination is not permanent and it is not automatic. If it is not filed by that October, the tariff on that model line lands on the whole value instead of the non-U.S. share for the year that follows.

The August 19 notice does the same thing on the car side: importers seeking eligibility for an automobile model imported on or after December 1, 2026 must submit new documentation by September 30, 2026, and those determinations run through November 30, 2027. Different dates, same architecture.

What it means when you are pricing a unit

None of this puts a form in your hands. What it does is explain why two dealers can quote the same model and land in different places, and why a quote can move between quarters without anything about the truck changing.

  • Ask, in writing, whether the model line you are pricing has a current U.S. content determination and through what date it runs.
  • If you are ordering a unit that will be imported in 2027, ask whether the October filing was made. That answer belongs in the conversation before deposit, not after delivery.
  • Remember it is per model line, not per truck. A dealer's answer for one configuration does not carry to another.
  • The rule also says an importer must promptly report a change in sourcing that decreases U.S. content. A determination made a year ago is not proof of the content today.
  • Parts are their own question. Proclamation 10984 covers medium- and heavy-duty vehicle parts, and the August 19 notice states that a separate process for applying the tariff only to the non-U.S. content of automobile parts was not established there.

The part nobody can tell you yet

What a specific unit will cost in 2027 depends on where it is built, what is inside it, and paperwork filed by someone you will never meet. That is uncomfortable, and pretending otherwise does not help anybody.

What you can control is the question you ask. A dealer who can tell you the determination status of a model line is a dealer who has read the file. One who has not heard of it is telling you something too.
