Ram Opens Orders: Power Wagon Finally Gets the Cummins

The Power Wagon finally gets a diesel. Ram opened orders for the 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon with the 6.7-liter Cummins High-Output at $89,560, and the swap buys 2,930 pounds of payload and 19,630 of towing without giving up a single piece of the off-road hardware.

Ram Opens Orders: Power Wagon Finally Gets the Cummins

For twenty years the Power Wagon has been the odd one out in the heavy-duty aisle. Every other three-quarter-ton work truck sold its diesel first and its hardware second. The Power Wagon did the opposite: it came with the locking axles, the disconnecting sway bar and the winch, and it came with a gas V8, take it or leave it. Plenty of people left it, because the truck they needed had to pull a trailer all week and go up a ranch road on Saturday.

That ends with the 2027 model. Ram has opened orders for the Ram 2500 Power Wagon fitted with the 6.7-liter Cummins High-Output inline-six turbo diesel, and the truck arrives at dealerships in the third quarter of 2026.

The numbers that decide it

The starting price is $89,560, destination included. In exchange, the diesel changes the two figures that actually matter on a work truck:

  • Payload: up to 2,930 pounds.
  • Towing: up to 19,630 pounds.
  • Torque: 1,075 lb.-ft. at the base level.

And there is a quieter line in the announcement that will matter more to some buyers than the torque figure: for the first time, the Power Wagon diesel can be ordered with fifth-wheel and gooseneck preparation from the factory. Until now, the truck with the best off-road hardware in the segment was the one you could not spec the way a gooseneck hauler needs it.

What did not get watered down

The fear with any diesel swap on a trail truck is that something has to give: ground clearance, articulation, or the front axle. It did not happen here. The Cummins version keeps the whole off-road package:

  • Electronic disconnecting front sway bar
  • Electronic locking front and rear axles, with a passive mechanical limited-slip rear
  • Solid axles measuring 9.25 inches front and 11.5 inches rear, with 38mm rear axle shafts
  • Bilstein monotube shock absorbers
  • 34-inch all-terrain tires and standard Mopar rock rails
  • Skid plates for the DEF tank, the fuel tank and the transfer case

The geometry stays honest too: 13.2 inches of ground clearance, a 26.1-degree approach angle, 20.6 degrees of breakover and 26 degrees of departure.

The DEF tank skid plate is the detail to notice

It reads like a footnote in a press release and it is not. A diesel exhaust fluid tank sits low and it is plastic, and on a truck that spends its weekends on rock and caliche it is one of the most exposed pieces on the vehicle. A cracked DEF tank does not leave you stranded on the spot — it leaves you with a derate a few hundred miles later, usually somewhere with no shop. Ram covering it from the factory says the engineers expected this truck to be used the way the badge implies.

The same goes for the fuel tank and transfer case plates. None of these are performance parts. They are the difference between a scratch and a tow bill.

What it means if you are shopping

At this price, the Power Wagon diesel is not competing with a base work truck and was never meant to. It competes with the crew who buy a Ram 2500 or a Silverado 2500 and then spend eight to twelve thousand dollars at an aftermarket shop putting lockers, a sway bar disconnect, real shocks and skid plates under it. That build takes months, voids some coverage, and the front axle usually never gets a factory-quality locker at all.

What you are actually buying here is the factory doing that build with a warranty behind it, on a truck that now also pulls 19,630 pounds. Whether that is worth it depends on one honest question: how many days a year does this truck leave pavement? If the answer is a handful, a Ram 2500 Big Horn with the same Cummins and a set of good tires does the job for a lot less. If the answer is most weekends, or if your work happens where there is no road, the math flips.

Order now, drive later

Orders being open is not the same as trucks being on the lot. Ram says third quarter of 2026 for dealership arrival, and heavy-duty allocations move slowly at launch. If this is the truck, the order goes in early and the trade stays in service a while longer.

One last piece of advice that has nothing to do with Ram: a truck that tows near its rating is a truck that eats brakes, tires and wheel bearings on a schedule, not by accident. Whatever you buy, the trailer brake controller settings and the tire pressures are worth an afternoon before the first long pull.
