Class 8 Truck Orders Explode 159% in February — The Industry Is Buying Again

What's up, truckers 🚛

I've got news many of us have been waiting for months to hear: fleets are buying trucks again — and big time.

According to preliminary data from FTR Transportation Intelligence, net Class 8 truck orders in February totaled 47,200 units, up 47% from January and an impressive +159% year-over-year.

This marks the third consecutive month of year-over-year growth above 20% and represents the highest monthly figure since September 2022.

Why Are They Buying Again?

Dan Moyer, senior commercial vehicle analyst at FTR, explains that momentum is no longer coming solely from deferred purchases (those postponed during the freight recession), but from improved market fundamentals:

  • Rising freight volumes since November 2025
  • Higher rate expectations — spot rates rose consistently
  • Clarity on tariffs and adjusted pricing
  • New EPA 2027 emissions regulations coming soon

Carter Vieth of ACT Research added a key point: "With onerous EPA'27 cost increases on the horizon, an aging fleet, and growing confidence that the winter run-up in freight rates will remain sticky, Class 8 order strength continued in February."

In other words, it's cheaper to buy now than wait for 2027 regulations to drive prices up.

The Numbers Don't Lie

  • 47,200 units ordered in February (FTR)
  • 46,200 units (ACT Research — independent estimate)
  • +159% YoY (FTR)
  • +156% YoY (ACT)
  • February 2026 was the eighth strongest month in over 530 months of historical data (ACT)
  • 10-year February average: 24,991 units — we nearly doubled that this year

What Does It Mean for You?

If you're an owner-operator or run a small fleet, this affects you directly:

  • More new trucks = more competition on popular routes
  • But also more reliable capacity to cover rising demand
  • If you're planning to buy a new truck, 2027 prices will be higher due to EPA regulations
  • Certified pre-owned trucks from 2023-2025 could be a better investment now

EPA 2027: Why Buy Now

New EPA 2027 emissions regulations will significantly increase the cost of new trucks due to:

  • More complex aftertreatment systems
  • Advanced monitoring technology
  • Additional certifications and testing

That's why many fleets are accelerating their purchases before prices rise.
