PA Lawmakers Eye Fuel Tax Relief Amidst Soaring Diesel Prices

Pennsylvania Drivers Brace for Potential Fuel Tax Holiday

Temporary Tax Break on the Table

Senator Lisa Boscola is pushing for a 60-day suspension of state taxes on both gasoline and diesel. She figures this could give some much-needed breathing room to families and businesses getting squeezed by rising costs. Right now, the state's gas tax is 57.6 cents per gallon, and the diesel tax is a whopping 74.1 cents. According to TruckMiles, the average diesel price in PA is currently hovering around $6.04 a gallon. Boscola pointed out that Pennsylvania already has the highest diesel tax in the nation, and one of the highest gas taxes. Her plan involves the state borrowing money to cover the lost tax revenue, so crucial road projects and State Police funding don't take a hit. This bill could be introduced any day now.

Push for a Longer Tax Holiday

Another lawmaker, Representative Abby Major, wants to go even further with a six-month fuel tax holiday, set to start July 1st. Her bill, HB2396, would apply to both gas and diesel and would require fuel sellers to pass the full savings directly to drivers. Major stated that this kind of relief means drivers can put money towards necessities like groceries and housing instead of just filling the tank. This bill is currently sitting in the House Transportation Committee.

Permanent Change to Tax Adjustments

Then there's Representative Joe D’Orsie, who's looking at a different angle. Right now, Pennsylvania's fuel taxes automatically adjust every January based on state law. D'Orsie’s bill, HB2144, would put the brakes on that automatic increase. Instead, lawmakers would have to vote on any fuel tax changes. He argues that in times of high inflation, drivers shouldn't face automatic tax hikes on essential purchases without a say from their elected officials. This bill is also waiting in the House Transportation Committee.
