Lando Norris won a dramatic 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix to give McLaren its first Grand Prix victory of the season. Max Verstappen finished second for Red Bull and Kimi Antonelli completed the podium for Mercedes after a race that changed direction through strategy, traffic, penalties and a late mechanical failure for Oscar Piastri.

Norris converted pole position into the victory, but the result was much less straightforward than the starting grid suggested. Piastri passed his McLaren teammate at Turn 2 on the opening lap, controlled the first portion of the race and looked capable of taking the win until the second pit-stop phase shifted the advantage back to Norris.

Piastri took control at the start

Norris had earned pole by only 0.012 seconds over Lewis Hamilton in an extremely close qualifying session. Grid penalties for Hamilton and Antonelli changed the order behind him, but Norris still had to defend a long run into the opening corners. Piastri made the decisive move at Turn 2 and emerged in front, while Verstappen, Hamilton and Charles Leclerc fought for position behind the McLarens.

Once the field settled, Norris remained close enough to pressure his teammate. Dirty air made an immediate pass difficult, and McLaren had to balance the interests of two drivers while evaluating one-stop and two-stop possibilities. The tension was visible in the radio messages: Norris believed he had more pace, while Piastri was being asked to increase his speed at the front.

Clear air and traffic reversed the McLaren battle

The race turned during the second round of stops. Piastri pitted on Lap 33, leaving Norris in clear air. Norris then produced a sequence of fast laps on older tires that created the margin he needed. Piastri's progress was also interrupted when he encountered Carlos Sainz in traffic and made contact with the Williams at the exit of Turn 2.

When Norris completed his own second stop at the end of Lap 39, he returned to the track ahead of Piastri. That was the critical exchange. McLaren had not ordered the cars to swap positions; the lead changed because Norris used the open track more effectively while Piastri lost time after his stop.

A gearbox problem ended Piastri's challenge

Piastri's afternoon deteriorated further when an apparent gearbox problem forced him to stop with roughly 15 laps remaining. The retirement triggered a Virtual Safety Car and created another opportunity for the leaders to change tires. Norris retained first place, while Verstappen and Antonelli stayed out and moved into the final podium positions.

Hamilton briefly appeared ahead of Antonelli after the VSC pit sequence, but replay showed that Antonelli had reached the relevant control line first and the position was returned. A five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane then removed Hamilton from realistic podium contention. Leclerc was classified fourth once the sanction was applied, with Hamilton fifth.

What the result says about the leading teams

For McLaren, the victory provides evidence that its Hungary upgrade package delivered usable race pace, not only a qualifying gain. Norris was quick in traffic, exceptionally fast in clear air and able to execute when the strategy opened a narrow window. The result also showed how difficult it is to manage two competitive cars without artificially deciding the race from the pit wall.

Red Bull maximized a difficult afternoon with Verstappen in second. His late tire strategy and the timing of the VSC helped, but he still had to keep the car in contention after reporting handling and shifting concerns. Mercedes left Hungary with Antonelli on the podium, an important result after his grid penalty and a race built around patient tire management.
