New or Remanufactured: How to Choose Your APU in 2026
What actually separates a new unit from a remanufactured one, what to check on the truck before buying, and how to ask for a quote that means something.
The question comes in almost every week, and it never gets a straight answer online: which APU should I buy?
The honest answer does not start with a number. It starts with understanding that you are not choosing between brands: you are choosing between conditions of the equipment, and that is where most operators get lost.
Two paths, not one
An APU is sold new or remanufactured, and they are not the same product at two prices.
- A remanufactured unit is not an old unit with a cleaning. The wear items come out and go back in new, and the unit is brought back to the manufacturer's specification before it leaves the shop.
- A new unit is the one to buy if the truck is staying with you and you want the longest runway before anyone touches it again.
It is the step most operators have never had explained to them. They ask for a price, hear one number, and assume that number is the product. Then they find a cheaper one somewhere and cannot tell whether they are comparing the same thing. Usually they are not.
What actually decides which one fits
It is not the budget. It is how long you are keeping the truck.
An operator running the math on a unit that sits in a truck he may sell in three years does not need the same thing as one who will run that truck for a decade. A new unit makes complete sense for the second; for the first, the math rarely closes.
The mistake that costs the most
The expensive mistake is not buying the wrong step. It is buying the right step for a truck that was never checked first.
An APU mounts to the frame and ties into the electrical system. If the batteries are marginal, if the charging system is soft, if the mounting rail already has issues, the unit gets blamed for problems it did not cause. We would rather look at the truck before you spend the money than argue about it afterward.
What an equipment quote does not include
Installation is separate and it varies by truck: what the mounting looks like, what has to be routed, what condition the electrical is in. Two identical tractors can quote differently based on what is already in the way.
We are also not promising you a payback period. What an APU saves depends on the price of diesel where you fuel, how many nights you actually sleep in the truck, and how you run. Anyone who quotes you a savings figure without asking those three things is selling, not calculating.
How to price yours honestly
- Decide the condition first, then ask the price. "How much is an APU" has several answers. "How much is a remanufactured unit installed on this truck" has one.
- Count the nights you actually idle. Not the nights you are away — the nights the engine runs while you sleep. That is the only number that drives the math.
- Ask how long you are keeping the truck. That decides it, more than the price itself.
- Get the install quoted against your truck, not in general.
