Monza Was Built in 110 Days and Just Turned 104
Construction took 110 days. The circuit opened September 3, 1922, and the Italian Grand Prix still runs there today.

They built the fastest racetrack in Europe in 110 days.
Not planned in 110 days. Built. Ground broken, trees cleared, grandstands raised, asphalt laid, done. The work finished on August 15, 1922, and the Autodromo Nazionale Monza opened officially on September 3 of that year with a race for small cars.
That was 104 years ago. The Italian Grand Prix runs there today.
What 110 days bought
Anybody who has waited three weeks on a part knows what 110 days for an entire racing facility means. There was no heavy equipment as we understand it. There were men, mules, hand tools and a date to hit.
What they put down has outlasted almost everything built since. The circuit has been modified — the current layout measures 5,793 meters after the changes completed in 2000 — but the shape, the trees of the royal park pressing in on both sides, and the long straight that gives Monza its nickname have been there the whole time.
The Formula 1 race is 53 laps, 306.72 kilometers. The lap record is 1:20.901, set by Lando Norris in 2025. Do the arithmetic on that: a lap of nearly six kilometers, averaged at highway speed times three.
And the layout is not fast because it is smooth. It is fast because it is brutal in a specific way: enormous straights ending in tight chicanes, which means the car spends the lap alternating between full throttle and hard braking. There is very little middle ground. A circuit like that eats brakes and rewards anything that stays stable under heavy deceleration.
That is a familiar combination to anybody who runs a loaded truck through mountain country. The straight is not what wears you out. The stop at the end of it is.
The part of Monza nobody drives anymore
Here is what most people at the track today will never see used.
The original 1922 design included two banked curves — high, sloped, 320-meter radius turns built to let cars carry speed through the corners instead of braking. They were rebuilt in 1955. Cars ran them in special races in 1957 and 1958.
After the 1961 Italian Grand Prix, they stopped being used for Formula 1.
The concrete is still there. You can walk it. It sits inside the modern circuit like a ring road nobody took, cracked and weathered and structurally sound enough that it has never needed to come down. A hundred years of Italian weather and it is still standing.
Why a trucking outfit cares about a 1922 racetrack
Because of what the banking actually is.
A banked curve is a suspension problem solved with geometry. Tilt the road and the load goes through the tires instead of across them. That is the same physics as a truck taking a highway on-ramp with the correct superelevation, and the same physics that punishes you when a ramp is built flat and your trailer wants to keep going straight.
The men who poured that concrete in 1922 did not have a computer model. They had the observation that a car goes faster through a corner when the road leans into it, and the nerve to build it at scale.
Everything under your truck is an argument with the same forces. Springs, shocks, alignment, tire pressure — all of it is about where the load goes when the road turns.
The lesson that keeps showing up
- Built right beats built new. The 1922 layout is still the spine of the circuit. Four generations of racing car and the geometry held.
- Retired is not the same as failed. The banking was not torn out because it collapsed. Racing changed around it.
- Speed is a maintenance problem. A 5,793-meter lap in 1:20 is not about power. It is about a surface, a suspension and a set of tires all doing exactly what they were set up to do.
Your truck is not a Formula 1 car and does not need to be. But the reason a corner feels wrong at 60 is the same reason it feels wrong at 200: something in the geometry is not carrying the load where it should.
