MATS 2027: March 18-20, and It Started With 83 Booths
MATS 2027 runs March 18-20 in Louisville. The organizer projects 830-plus exhibitors, 53,000-plus attendees and over a million square feet, in a show that opened in 1972 with 83 exhibitors and 4,000 people.
The biggest heavy-duty trucking show in the country started with 83 exhibitors and a corner of one hall. The 2027 Mid-America Trucking Show runs March 18 to 20, 2027 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. If you have never gone, or you went once and could not find the half you actually needed, here is the show in plain terms.
The dates, the address and the hours
MATS 2027 is Thursday March 18 through Saturday March 20, at the Kentucky Exposition Center, 937 Phillips Lane, Louisville, Kentucky 40209. The doors do not open the same way all three days, and that matters if you are planning a route around it:
- Thursday: VIP hours 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., then general admission 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Friday: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Saturday closes at four. Every year somebody drives in Saturday morning expecting a full day and gets seven hours, three of which are spent walking.
What the organizer says to expect
For the 2027 edition the show is projecting more than 830 exhibiting companies, over 53,000 attendees, more than 1,000,000 square feet of exhibits and 40-plus featured events. The 2026 edition closed with 53,000-plus through the doors.
A million square feet is the number that catches people out. That is roughly seventeen football fields of floor. Nobody walks all of it well in one day, which is why the three-day structure exists and why the veterans pick two halls and skip the rest.
Where it came from
The show was the idea of Paul K. Young, who wanted an event in the eastern half of the United States comparable to the International Trucking Show then running in California, and easier to reach than the North American Truck Show that had been held in Boston for years. His stated goal was an event built for the people doing the work: owner-operators and fleets, not just manufacturers talking to each other.
The first Mid-America Trucking Show was held in 1972, at the same Kentucky Exposition Center it still uses. It occupied part of the West Wing and drew 4,000 attendees and 83 exhibitors. It was, by the organizer's own account, a modest beginning next to the trucking events of the day.
The numbers that show how it grew
- 1984: 270 exhibiting companies, and the show moves to the East Wing.
- 1987: first year past 400 exhibitors, with attendance over 30,000.
- 1991: the new South Wing A opens and fills immediately with 650 exhibitors and more than 35,000 attendees. This is the point where MATS becomes the largest trucking tradeshow in North America.
- 1997: first year with more than 1,000 exhibiting companies and more than a million square feet of exhibits.
- 2001: the show truck competition is renamed the Paul K. Young Truck Beauty Championships, after the founder.
- 2012: the largest MATS to that point, at almost 1.4 million square feet.
- 2015: the highest attendance ever recorded, 81,768.
- 2022: the 50th anniversary edition, and the first MATS after the pandemic.
By the organizer's own count, 2022 was the 50th. That makes 2027 the 55th edition.
Why an owner-operator goes
Three reasons that survive the drive. First, parts and accessories in one place, where you can put your hands on the thing before buying it. Second, the shop demonstrations, which are the closest most operators get to watching a procedure done correctly by somebody who does it every day. Third, the pricing: vendors quote show numbers, and a decision you were going to make in April gets made in March for less.
What it is not is a place to solve a problem you already have. If the truck is due for an inspection or the tires are wearing crooked, that gets fixed before you leave, not in a parking lot in Louisville. The Truck Savers handles that side of it in Houston, Dallas and Monterrey.
Planning around it
Louisville fills up. Hotel rooms near the Expo Center go early and the ones left in March are not the cheap ones. If you are running loads that week, the show is on Interstate 65 within a few minutes of the airport, which makes it unusually easy to reach with a truck compared with downtown convention centers.
