MATS 2026: The Most Spectacular Trucks from Mid-America Trucking Show
The Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) 2026 in Nashville brought together over 70,000 truckers from March 16-19. Never Satisfied Builds won the PKY Big Buildoff with an immaculate chromed 1985 Peterbilt 359. John Penn was named Trucker of the Year. Here are the highlights from North America's largest trucking event.
๐ MATS 2026: The Super Bowl of Trucking
From March 16-19, 2026, more than 70,000 people descended upon Nashville, Tennessee for the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS), North America's largest trucking event.
MATS is where the industry gathers: owner-operators, fleets, manufacturers, vendors, and custom truck enthusiasts. For 4 days, the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville (yes, the event says "Nashville" but it's technically in Louisville, just across the river) becomes the epicenter of the trucking world.
This year was special: new electric and hybrid trucks, next-generation laser alignment technology, and of course, the most impressive custom trucks you'll ever see.
๐ PKY Big Buildoff: Never Satisfied Builds Takes the Crown
The PKY Truck Beauty Championship (also known as "Big Buildoff") is the most prestigious custom truck competition in the United States. This year's winner was Never Satisfied Builds with a 1985 Peterbilt 359 that left everyone speechless.
Winning Truck Specs:
- Model: Peterbilt 359 EXHD (Extra Heavy Duty) 1985
- Engine: Remanufactured Caterpillar 3406E, 550 HP
- Transmission: Eaton Fuller 18-speed
- Finish: Full chrome (bumper, grille, tanks, stacks, lights, accessories)
- Paint: Candy Apple Red with ghost flames
- Interior: Hand-stitched Italian leather, polished walnut dashboard
- Lights: Over 200 chrome LED chicken lights
- Build time: 4 years
The owner, Mike Johnson from Idaho, invested over $300,000 in the complete restoration. "This truck is my life," he said upon receiving the trophy. "Every bolt, every wire, every piece was restored or replaced. Nothing is original except the frame."
๐๏ธ John Penn: Trucker of the Year 2026
Overdrive Magazine and the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) named John Penn as Trucker of the Year 2026. Penn, an owner-operator from North Carolina, has driven over 4 million miles accident-free in 35 years of career.
In addition to his impeccable safety record, Penn volunteers in mentorship programs for new drivers and has rescued over 20 stranded truckers during roadside emergencies.
"I don't do this for awards," Penn said in his acceptance speech. "I do it because I love driving and because this industry gave me everything. It's my responsibility to give back."
๐ง New Technology at MATS 2026
Beyond custom trucks, MATS is where manufacturers present their latest innovations. This year we saw:
1. Hunter Engineering: Next-Generation Laser Alignment
Hunter presented its HawkEye Elite 2026 system, an alignment computer using 3D cameras and laser to measure alignment, suspension, and steering geometry in less than 10 minutes. Precision is 0.01 degrees, and it detects problems previous systems couldn't see.
At The Truck Saversโข, we already have Hunter technology installed (our "alignment computer") โ though not the 2026 model yet. But trust us: perfect alignment can save you $4,000 per year in diesel and tires.
2. Freightliner Cascadia EV: The Electric Truck That Actually Works
Freightliner brought its Cascadia EV 2026 with a 600 kWh battery (50% more capacity than the 2024 model). Real-world range: 420 miles on a full charge, sufficient for regional routes.
The problem? It costs $280,000, almost double a diesel Cascadia. And you need access to 350 kW DC fast charging, which only exists at a handful of truck stops.
Verdict: not ready for long haul yet, but for regional fleets with fixed routes, it's viable.
3. Go Green APU: New Generation Quieter Model
Go Green presented its 2026 "Whisper" APU Model, 40% quieter than previous models. Uses a 4-cylinder Kubota engine with active noise cancellation technology.
Consumption: 0.08 gallons/hour for full air conditioning. With diesel at $3.89/gallon, that's $0.31/hour vs. $3.11/hour if you idle the main engine.

๐ ๏ธ Why MATS Matters for the Average Trucker?
It may seem like MATS is just for show trucks and large fleets, but there are real benefits for owner-operators:
1. Deals on Parts and Services
Vendors offer MATS-exclusive discounts you won't see the rest of the year. Tires, brakes, suspensions, accessories โ all at special prices.
2. Free Education
Seminars on preventive maintenance, DOT compliance, owner-operator finances, and more. This year, FMCSA held a panel on avoiding freight fraud (very relevant with the rise of double brokering).
3. Networking
Meet other truckers, exchange contacts for reliable brokers, and learn business tricks. MATS is where connections are made that can improve your operation.
๐ MATS 2027: Registration Now Open
The Mid-America Trucking Show 2027 will be held March 25-27 at the same location (Louisville, Kentucky). Early bird registration is now open at truckingshow.com.
If you've never been, it's worth it. It's like Disneyland for truckers โ but with better hot dogs and more chrome.
๐ The Truck Savers at MATS 2027?
