GM Recall: 11,787 Silverado/Sierra 3500 (2025-26) for Faulty Fuel Pump
Detroit, Michigan — General Motors announced in March 2026 the recall of 11,787 heavy-duty pickups model year 2025-2026 due to a faulty rear fuel pump that could cause the engine to stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash 🚨🚛
Affected Models
The recall affects:
- 🛻 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD (2025-2026)
- 🛻 GMC Sierra 3500 HD (2025-2026)
Requirements:
- ✅ Equipped with gasoline engines (not diesel)
- ✅ Dual fuel tank configuration
Total affected vehicles: 11,787 units 🔢
What Is the Problem?
The defect is in the rear fuel pump, which has the function of transferring gasoline from the rear tank to the front tank:
- ⚠️ The pump may fail to transfer adequate fuel to the front tank
- 🚫 This can cause the engine to stall while driving
- 💥 An unexpected engine stall increases the risk of a crash
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) classified this recall as a safety risk due to its potential to cause accidents.
Solution: Free Software Update
GM will fix the problem through an engine control module (ECM) software update — at no cost to owners:
- 🔧 ECM software update at authorized dealerships
- 💰 No cost to owners
- ⏱️ Quick procedure — does not require replacement of physical parts
Owner Notification
GM will send notification letters to owners anticipated for April 20, 2026 📬
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Numbers) of affected vehicles were made available on the NHTSA website on March 5, 2026.
How to Check If Your Pickup Is Affected?
- Visit nhtsa.gov/recalls
- Enter your 17-digit VIN (found on windshield, driver side, lower left corner)
- The system will tell you if your vehicle is included in the recall
What to Do If You Have One of These Pickups?
If you own a Silverado 3500 or Sierra 3500 (2025-2026) with gasoline engine and dual tanks:
- Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls
- Contact your GM dealership to schedule the software update
- Don't ignore the recall — an engine stall on the highway can be dangerous
- Wait for the official letter from GM with specific instructions (approx. April 20)
⚠️ In the meantime: If you experience symptoms of fuel starvation (engine stalls, loss of power) despite having gasoline in the tanks, take your pickup to the dealership immediately.
