Trucking Freight Fraud Hits $6.6 Billion/Year — NMFTA Launches Prevention Hub
Cargo theft and freight fraud in the U.S. transportation industry hits $6.6 billion annually. Average theft value jumped 36% to $273,990. NMFTA responds with new Fraud Prevention Hub and the Senate introduces the SAFER Act.

💰 $6.6 Billion: The Annual Cost of Trucking Fraud
If you thought diesel prices were your worst enemy, think again. Freight fraud and cargo theft in the U.S. transportation industry is estimated at $6.6 billion per year, according to the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI). And that's the conservative estimate — others are significantly higher.
To put it in perspective: that figure dwarfs the annual revenue of most trucking companies in America.
📊 The Numbers You Need to Know
Data from CargoNet reveals a troubling trend:
- Average value per theft: $273,990 — up 36% from $202,364 in 2024
- Estimated annual cost: $6.6 billion (that's more than $18 million per day)
- Average carriers lose more than $520,000 annually to theft
And thieves aren't picky. A recent case in Europe: a full trailer carrying 12 tons of KitKat bars was stolen between a factory in Italy and its destination in Poland. More than 400,000 chocolate bars that remain unaccounted for. As a KitKat spokesperson quipped: "We've always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat — but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally."
🛡️ NMFTA Responds: Freight Fraud Prevention Hub
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) has launched its Freight Fraud Prevention Hub, a centralized resource designed to protect carriers, shippers, 3PLs, brokers, and all logistics stakeholders.
The Hub includes:
- Best practices for freight fraud prevention
- Educational content on how fraud works and how to detect it
- Expert webinars sharing real-world fraud trends and prevention strategies
- SCAC Verified — carrier identity verification using the Standard Carrier Alpha Code
"As freight fraud continues to rise across the industry, education and verification are critical," said Joe Ohr, COO of NMFTA.
⚖️ SAFER Act: Anti-Theft Legislation in the Senate
On Capitol Hill, Senator Todd Young (R-Indiana) introduced the "Securing American Freight Enforcement and Reliability in Transport Act" (SAFER Act) to combat cargo theft at the federal level.
"Americans deserve safe and reliable supply chains and roads," said Young, chairman of the Senate Surface Transportation, Freight, Pipelines and Safety subcommittee. The bill faces an uncertain future, but it marks an important step toward legislative recognition of the problem.
🕵️ How Modern Freight Fraud Works
Cargo theft isn't just the guy with the crowbar breaking a padlock anymore. Strategic cargo theft — theft by fraud — is the fastest-growing method. Criminals:
- Impersonate legitimate carriers with fake documents
- Intercept loads by posing as the assigned carrier
- Use technology to fake SCAC codes and MC numbers
- Exploit gaps in broker and load board verification

- Report incidents — unreported cases fuel the problem
