Ford's biggest recall in years: trailer module glitch may cause trailer brakes and lights to fail. Includes 2021-2026 F-150, 2022-2026 Super Duty, 2024-2026 Ranger, 2022-2026 Maverick. Fix: OTA update or dealer visit.
🚨 MASSIVE ALERT: Ford announced the recall of 4.38 million trucks due to a software issue that may cause trailer lights and brakes to fail 🚛❌
This is one of the largest recalls in Ford history — and if you own a recent-model Ford pickup, you're probably affected.
Which Trucks Are Affected?
The recall (NHTSA ID: 26V104) includes:
- Ford F-150 — model years 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026
- Ford F-250 Super Duty — 2022-2026
- Ford F-350 Super Duty — 2022-2026
- Ford F-450 Super Duty — 2022-2026
- Ford F-550 Super Duty — 2022-2026
- Ford Ranger — 2024-2026
- Ford Maverick — 2022-2026
Total: 4,379,106 vehicles in the United States alone.
What's the Problem?
The Integrated Trailer Module has a software bug that may cause:
- Trailer turn signals to stop working 🚨
- Trailer brake lights to fail 🛑
- Trailer electric brakes NOT TO ENGAGE ⚠️
Imagine driving on the highway towing a loaded trailer and the trailer brakes don't respond when you need them.
Or worse: traffic behind you can't see your brake lights and rear-ends you.
This is DANGEROUS.
What's the Fix?
Ford says the repair is 100% free and can be delivered two ways:
Option 1: Over-the-Air (OTA) Update
If your truck has Ford Power-Up (remote updates), you'll receive a software update directly to your pickup — no dealer visit required.
Ford will begin sending OTA updates immediately, with full rollout by May 2026.
Option 2: Dealer Visit
If your pickup does NOT have Power-Up, you'll need to take it to a Ford dealership to update the trailer module software.
Estimated time: 30-45 minutes. No charge.
How Do I Know If My Truck Is Affected?
Three ways to check:
- Go to nhtsa.gov/recalls and search your VIN
- Call Ford at 1-866-436-7332 (reference: recall 26S21)
- Wait for the notification letter Ford will mail
Ford will begin mailing letters starting March 24, 2026.
Other Ford Recalls (Same Day)
As if 4.38 million weren't enough, Ford also announced:
Recall 26V119 — F-250/F-350 (Driveshaft Separation)
- Models: F-250 and F-350 Super Duty 4x4 with single rear wheel
- Problem: The driveshaft may separate while driving
- Risk: Total loss of traction and possible crash
- Fix: Dealer will replace driveshaft
Recall 26V090 — Ford Transit (Brake Pedal Disconnect)
- Models: Ford Transit 2020-2023
- Problem: Brake pedal may disconnect from master cylinder
- Risk: Unable to brake
- Fix: Dealer will replace pedal parts
What If I'm Towing NOW?
If you have one of these pickups and tow regularly, Ford recommends:
- Check trailer lights before every trip — make sure turn signals and brakes work
- Test trailer electric brakes with manual controller before hitting the road
- Take your pickup to the dealer ASAP if you don't have OTA
What If I Crashed Because of This?
If you had an accident related to trailer light or brake failure, Ford recommends contacting a product defect attorney.
You can also file a complaint with NHTSA at nhtsa.gov/complaints.
