Ford's Largest Recall in Years
Ford Motor Company announced a recall of over 4.3 MILLION pickups and SUVs manufactured between 2021 and 2026.
Affected Models
- Ford F-150 (2021-2026)
- Ford F-250 Super Duty (2021-2026)
- Ford F-350 Super Duty (2021-2026)
- Ford F-450 Super Duty (2021-2026)
- Ford F-550 Super Duty (2021-2026)
- Ford Maverick (2022-2026)
- Ford Ranger (2021-2026)
Years: 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026 models.
What's the Problem?
Software failure in the Integrated Trailer Module.
What Can Happen
The module can lose communication with the connected trailer, causing:
- Trailer turn signals DON'T work β other drivers don't know you're turning
- Trailer brake lights DON'T work β nobody knows you're braking
- Trailer brakes DON'T work β TOTAL loss of trailer braking
The Risk
Imagine this:
- You're on I-10 pulling a 10,000 lb trailer
- You need to emergency brake
- Your truck brakes... but the trailer DOESN'T
- The trailer pushes you = loss of control + longer stopping distance
This can cause serious accidents. π¬
Why Now?
Ford received reports from drivers who experienced:
- Error message on screen: "Trailer disconnected" β when trailer WAS connected
- Trailer lights flickering or turning off
- Trailer electric brakes not responding
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) investigated and Ford decided to recall before more incidents occurred.
The Solution
Ford will release an OTA (over-the-air) software update.
How It Works
- If your truck has FordPass Connect or is connected to WiFi, the update will arrive automatically
- You'll receive a notification on the vehicle screen
- You don't need to go to the dealer (in most cases)
- Installation takes approx. 15-20 minutes
If You Don't Have Connectivity
If your truck DOESN'T have internet connection, you'll need to:
- Go to an authorized Ford dealer
- They'll do the update for free
- Takes approx. 30-60 minutes
What to Do If You Have One of These Pickups?
1. Check If Your Vehicle Is Affected
Go to: ford.com/recalls and enter your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).
Or call Ford Customer Service: 1-866-436-7332
2. Wait for Official Notification
Ford will send letters by mail to all affected owners.
You'll also receive notification in the FordPass app if you have it installed.
3. Install the Update
When you receive the OTA notification, install it as soon as possible.
If it doesn't arrive within 30 days, call Ford or go to the dealer.
4. Meanwhile, Use Caution
If you use your pickup to tow a trailer:
- Check trailer lights BEFORE each trip β have someone verify they all work
- Test trailer electric brakes β activate manual control before hitting the road
- Maintain more distance β assume trailer might NOT brake and compensate with more space
- Avoid heavy loads if possible until the problem is fixed
Other Ford Recalls in March 2026
This isn't the only one. Ford also announced:
F-250/F-350 Recall: Rear Driveshaft Separation
Affected models: Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty (2025-2026)
Problem: Friction weld in rear driveshaft may fail β shaft separation β total power loss
Solution: Dealer inspects and replaces shaft if necessary
General Motors Recall (Competition)
It's not just Ford. GM also called a recall:
- Chevrolet Silverado 3500 / GMC Sierra 3500 (2025-2026)
- Problem: Defective rear fuel pump β engine stalls while driving
- Units affected: ~12,000
Impact on Commercial Fleets
If you have a Ford pickup fleet, this is important:
Downtime
- OTA trucks: 15-20 min per unit
- Non-OTA trucks: 30-60 min at dealer + travel time
If you have 50 trucks, you could lose hours of operation.
Plan Ahead
- Schedule updates during low-use days
- Prioritize trucks that most frequently use trailers
- Keep record of which units have been updated
How Many Accidents Has It Caused?
As of March 2026, Ford reported that:
- No confirmed deaths related to this defect
- Reported incidents: several, but no official numbers published
- The recall is preventive β before it becomes more serious
Context: Ford and Recent Recalls
Ford has had several large recalls in recent years:
- 2022: 2.9 million vehicles for transmission problem
- 2023: 1.5 million F-150 for rear brake defect
- 2025: 900,000 vehicles for electrical problem
- 2026: This one (4.3M pickups) + driveshaft recall (F-250/350)
The F-Series remains the best-selling pickup in the U.S., but modern technological complexity brings more failure points.
Should You Worry?
If You DON'T Tow
The problem only affects when towing. If you only use your truck without a trailer, there's no immediate risk.
But still update the software when notification arrives.
If You DO Tow
Yes, worry.
Trailer brakes are critical for safety. Don't wait β check your VIN today.
π§ Connection to Maintenance
This recall is about software, but it reminds you of the importance of complete preventive maintenance.
Many safety problems DON'T come with recalls β they simply wear out over time:
- Mechanical brakes β worn pads/rotors increase stopping distance
- Suspension β worn components affect control when towing
- Alignment β misaligned trucks are harder to control with trailer
- Tires β incorrect pressure or uneven wear = danger when braking
At The Truck Saversβ’ we offer:
- FREE road simulator inspection β detects hidden problems
- Precision alignment β especially important if you tow frequently
- Suspension/steering inspection β critical for safety with loads
- Brake service β we keep your braking system at 100%
Let Ford fix the software... we'll take care of the rest. πͺ
