Ford Recalls 4.3 Million Trucks Due to Software Defect

Ford has announced a significant recall affecting approximately 4.3 million trucks and SUVs, encompassing models up to the 2026 model year, including the F-150, Super Duty, Maverick, and Ranger.

The primary reason for this massive recall is a software defect in the integrated trailer module (ITRM).

What's the Problem?

This software issue can lead to a loss of communication between the trailer module and the vehicle, potentially causing:

  • The trailer's brake lights to fail
  • The trailer's turn signals not to work
  • In some cases, the trailer's braking function to fail

How to Know If Your Truck Is Affected?

Owners may see a "Trailer brake module fault" message and a rapidly flashing turn signal indicator if this problem occurs.

Solution

Ford plans to address this by providing an over-the-air (OTA) software update. Owner notifications for this specific recall are expected to begin in March 2026.

Other Ford Recalls — Maverick, Super Duty, Ranger

In addition to the massive 4.3 million recall, several other recalls impact these models for 2025 and 2026:

Ford Maverick (2025-2026)

The Maverick has several active recalls:

1. Moonroof Glass Detachment

  • 323 units affected
  • Moonroof glass panels may detach due to improper adhesion
  • Risk: Glass can fly off while driving, posing a hazard to other vehicles

2. Dashboard Panel May Detach

  • Approximately 6,897 Mavericks recalled
  • A dashboard panel could detach if the airbag inflates, becoming a projectile inside the cab

3. Engine Oil Leak

  • Certain 2025 Maverick vehicles are subject to a recall for a potential engine oil leak that could lead to a fire

4. Faulty EGR Valve

  • Some 2024-2025 Maverick models included in a recall related to exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves that might cause engine power loss

Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty (2025-2026 and 2026)

1. Right-Rear Axle Shaft Fracture

  • Specific 2026 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks are recalled because right-rear axle shafts may fracture due to improper heat treatment
  • Consequences: Loss of drive power or the vehicle rolling away while in park

2. Rear Driveshaft Separation

  • Certain 2025-2026 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks may have a rear driveshaft that could separate due to insufficient weld penetration
  • Units affected: 11,431

Ford Ranger (2024-2026)

1. Faulty Side Curtain Airbags

  • Over 100,000 Ranger pickups from these model years are recalled due to a defect that could cause side curtain airbags to tear upon deployment

2. Faulty EGR Valve

  • Some 2025 Ranger models affected by a recall concerning EGR valves that could lead to engine power loss

GM Also Recalls Silverado/Sierra 3500

It's not just Ford. General Motors also announced a significant recall:

  • Silverado and Sierra 3500 (one-ton model)
  • Issue: Faulty fuel pump
  • This defect can cause loss of engine power or even engine stalling while driving

What to Do If You Have an Affected Truck?

If you own a Ford F-150, Super Duty, Maverick, Ranger or a GM Silverado/Sierra 3500:

1. Check If Your Vehicle Is Affected

  • Visit nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter your VIN (vehicle identification number)
  • You can also call Ford at 1-866-436-7332 or GM at 1-800-222-1020

2. Schedule the Repair

  • For many software recalls, Ford can send an OTA update directly to your truck
  • For recalls requiring physical repair, contact your local dealer
  • Recall repairs are FREE — the manufacturer covers all costs

3. Don't Ignore the Recall

Even if your truck seems to work fine, recalls exist for safety reasons. Issues like:

  • Trailer brakes that don't work
  • Axles that fracture
  • Moonroofs that detach

...can cause serious or fatal accidents.
