Ford Recall: 47,000 F-150 Lightning for Brake System Issue
Ford announced on March 30 a recall of 47,000 F-150 Lightning pickups (2022-2023 models) due to a brake module defect that could cause partial brake loss. NHTSA urges owners to take their vehicles to dealers for free repair.
๐จ Ford Recalls 47,000 F-150 Lightning Trucks
Ford Motor Company issued a safety recall on March 30, 2026, for approximately 47,500 F-150 Lightning pickups from model years 2022 and 2023. The problem: a defect in the brake control module (BCM) that could cause partial brake loss under certain conditions.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the brake module may experience a software failure that temporarily disables the regenerative braking system, forcing the vehicle to rely solely on traditional mechanical brakes. While mechanical brakes continue to work, braking distance can increase significantly without warning to the driver.
๐ Recall Details
- Affected models: F-150 Lightning 2022-2023 (all versions: Pro, XLT, Lariat, Platinum)
- Number of vehicles: 47,500 in the United States; 2,800 in Canada
- Issue: Software failure in brake control module (BCM)
- Risk: Partial brake loss, increased braking distance
- Solution: Free software update at Ford dealerships
- Notification date: Ford will begin notifying owners by mail on April 15, 2026
โ ๏ธ Is Your F-150 Lightning Affected?
If you own a 2022 or 2023 F-150 Lightning, you can verify if your vehicle is included in the recall three ways:
- Ford website: ford.com/support/recalls โ enter your VIN (vehicle identification number, visible on the dashboard driver's side)
- NHTSA website: nhtsa.gov/recalls โ search by VIN
- Call your Ford dealer: Provide your VIN and they'll verify immediately
NHTSA recall number: 26V-148
Ford recall number: 26S13
๐ ๏ธ What Should You Do?
Ford and NHTSA recommend the following:
If Your Vehicle Is Affected:
- Don't stop driving your F-150 Lightning โ mechanical brakes still work normally
- Maintain greater following distance โ assume your braking distance may be longer than usual
- Schedule appointment at your dealership โ the repair (software update) takes approximately 30 minutes and is completely free
- Don't ignore the notification โ this is a real safety issue
If You're Unsure:
If you don't know if your vehicle is affected but have noticed any brake issues (longer braking distance, warning lights, unusual behavior), take your F-150 Lightning to a Ford dealer immediately.
๐ What Causes the Problem?
The F-150 Lightning, like all electric vehicles, uses regenerative braking: when you release the accelerator or apply the brakes, the electric motor converts to a generator and helps brake the vehicle while recharging the battery.
This system has two benefits:
- Greater efficiency: Recovers energy that would normally be lost as heat in the brakes
- Less wear on mechanical brakes: Regenerative braking does much of the work
The problem in 2022-2023 models is that a software bug in the control module can temporarily disable the regenerative system. When this happens:
- The driver receives no immediate warning
- Mechanical brakes continue working, but now must do ALL the braking work
- Braking distance increases because the system didn't expect to rely 100% on mechanical brakes at that moment
Ford discovered the problem after internal engineer reports and field testing. No confirmed accidents related to this defect have been reported, but NHTSA classified the recall as Category II (moderate risk of injury or crash).
๐ Repair Timeline
- March 30, 2026: Ford publicly announces the recall
- April 15, 2026: Ford begins sending mail notifications to affected owners
- Starting April 20: Ford dealerships will have the software update available
- Repair: Takes approximately 30 minutes, at no cost
๐ฐ How Much Does It Cost? Who Pays?
The repair is 100% free, even if your vehicle is no longer under warranty. Ford covers:
- Software update
- Complete brake system diagnostic
- Any additional repairs necessary related to the recall
If you already paid for a repair related to this issue BEFORE the recall announcement, you can request a reimbursement from Ford. Contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
๐ What About Trucks?
This recall only affects the F-150 Lightning (100% electric version of the pickup). It does NOT affect:
- F-150 with combustion engine (gasoline or hybrid)
- F-250, F-350, F-450 Super Duty
- Ford commercial trucks (F-550, F-650, F-750)
That said, if you have a Ford truck (diesel or gas) and notice brake system problems, it's always a good idea to have it checked.
At The Truck Saversโข, we offer free brake, suspension, and steering inspection with our road simulator. We detect 100+ failure points before they become dangerous or expensive. Available in Houston and Monterrey.
๐ข Owner Reactions
In F-150 Lightning forums like F150gen14.com and LightningOwnersForum.com, some owners report noticing the problem before the recall:
"Two weeks ago, my brakes felt 'different' โ like I had to press harder. I thought it was my imagination, but now it makes sense. Taking my Lightning to the dealer tomorrow." โ User @TXLightningDriver
"Ford should have caught this before releasing the model. It's a software issue, something they should have tested exhaustively. Still, I appreciate they're fixing it free and fast." โ User @EVTrucker
๐ฎ What's Next?
Ford plans to release an over-the-air (OTA) update for F-150 Lightning 2024+ models to prevent this problem. The 2022-2023 models don't have full OTA capability, which is why they require a dealer visit.
This is the third major recall for the F-150 Lightning since its 2022 launch:
- 2022: Battery recall (fire risk) โ 3,000 units
- 2023: Propulsion software recall โ 18,000 units
- 2026: This brake recall โ 47,500 units
Despite these recalls, the F-150 Lightning remains the best-selling electric pickup in the United States, with over 150,000 units sold since launch.
โ Conclusion: Don't Panic, But Act Fast
If you own a 2022-2023 F-150 Lightning:
- Verify if your VIN is in the recall
- Schedule appointment at your Ford dealership
- Drive with caution (greater following distance) until repaired
- The repair is free and quick
These types of recalls are common in new vehicles with advanced technology. What matters is that Ford and NHTSA acted quickly to fix it before there were serious accidents.
