Formula 1 kicked off the 2026 season at full speed — and Mercedes is back.

The 2026 Australian Grand Prix (March 6-8 in Melbourne) saw George Russell of Mercedes cross the finish line in first place, followed by his teammate Kimi Antonelli, completing a dominant 1-2 for Mercedes.

This is Mercedes' first win in Melbourne since 2019 and marks the official beginning of the new era of F1 technical regulations.

Mercedes Is Back

After years of Red Bull dominance, Mercedes proved why they were the dominant team of the past decade.

George Russell, who started from pole position, controlled the race from start to finish. Despite early pressure from Charles Leclerc, Russell held firm and took advantage of a Virtual Safety Car to make his pit stop at the perfect time.

Kimi Antonelli, the 19-year-old Italian who replaced Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, showed impressive maturity in his debut — finishing second and securing valuable points for the team from the first race.

Lewis Hamilton — Ferrari

Another emotional point of the race was seeing Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari colors for the first time. The seven-time world champion finished in 4th place, proving he still has much to offer in his new team.

Max Verstappen — 6th Place

The reigning world champion Max Verstappen had a difficult start to the season, finishing only in sixth place. Red Bull Racing is clearly struggling with the new 2026 technical regulations, which drastically changed aerodynamics and power units.

The New F1 2026 Rules

This season marks the beginning of a new technical era:

• 50/50 hybrid engines — half combustion, half electric
• 100% sustainable fuel
