F1 2026: George Russell Wins the Austrian GP; Verstappen Crashes in Q3, Charges to the Podium
George Russell dominated the 2026 Austrian GP from pole at the Red Bull Ring. Verstappen, after a Q3 crash, fought back to P2 and championship leader Kimi Antonelli rounded out the podium as his points lead was trimmed.

The Red Bull Ring served up another dramatic Austrian Grand Prix. George Russell took a lights-to-flag victory on Sunday, on a day that bruised home hero Max Verstappen and shook up the 2026 title fight.
A Mercedes podium... with a bittersweet edge
Russell launched from pole and never let go. Behind him, Verstappen produced a champion's drive to grab P2 by just three tenths, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli had to settle for third. Mercedes' double podium (Russell 1st, Antonelli 3rd) carried an internal twist: Russell clawed points back from his own teammate and took second in the standings off him.
The crash that nearly changed everything
The controversy was born on Saturday. On his final Q3 run, Verstappen lost control at Turn 9 and crashed into the barriers, triggering yellow flags just as Russell approached the final sector. Stewards ruled that Russell "encountered a single yellow flag and had lifted sufficiently," so he kept pole despite the controversy. That pole proved decisive.
