Diesel Truck Liberation Act: Bill Would Strip EPA of All Truck Emissions Authority

This is big news, truckers. Rep. Mike Collins (R-Georgia) just introduced the "Diesel Truck Liberation Act" — a bill that would completely strip the EPA of authority over diesel truck emissions. And it has Senate support too.

What Would This Bill Do?

  • Ban federal agencies from requiring emissions control devices or onboard diagnostic systems on trucks
  • Remove EPA authority to enforce Clean Air Act requirements related to vehicle emissions
  • Protect individuals from federal penalties for modifying or removing emissions equipment

"American truckers and farmers are the backbone of this nation, but the EPA has treated them like criminals for maintaining their own equipment," Collins said. Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

Why It Matters

DPF, DEF, and SCR systems have added $20,000-30,000 to new truck prices and created maintenance headaches. A failed sensor on the road can shut you down completely. This bill could change all of that.

The bill comes as the Trump administration and EPA move to rescind the 2009 "endangerment finding" — the legal basis for greenhouse gas regulations on trucks.

The Other Side

Environmental groups warn rolling back emissions standards could result in over 10 billion tons of additional pollution and cost consumers $2 trillion through 2055 in health and environmental impacts, per the Environmental Defense Fund.
