Diesel Prices Skyrocket to Historic Levels — What Every Trucker Needs to Know
Diesel prices jumped 96 cents in one week — the largest increase in history. Here's what it means for your wallet and how to protect yourself.
What's up, truckers 🚛
I've got news that's going to hit your wallet hard, but it's better you hear it straight from us.
The price of diesel in the United States jumped 96 cents per gallon in a single week — the largest increase in the history of the DOE/EIA index, which has been tracked since 1994. Yes, you read that right. Bigger than when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
How Much Are We Looking At?
Diesel closed at $4.86 per gallon. We haven't seen prices like this since December 2022, when it hit $4.96. And it's been 8 consecutive weeks of increases — a total of $1.40 per gallon.
Why Is It Going Up?
The conflict with Iran is closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's oil passes. The numbers are alarming:
- Only 4 ships crossed the strait on March 8, when normally 91 pass through
- Goldman Sachs reports that traffic is at 10% of normal
- 17 million barrels per day stopped leaving the Persian Gulf last week
- Iraq and Kuwait had to shut down production because their storage tanks filled up
What Does This Mean for Your Wallet?
If you're driving a semi that burns 150 gallons a week, you're paying $144 more per week compared to 8 weeks ago. That's over $600 a month extra just in diesel.
- Your fuel surcharge should go up this week — check your contract
- If you're an owner-operator, recalculate your routes and costs NOW
- Those with fixed contracts are going to hurt — consider renegotiating
🌿 The Solution Many Don't Know About: Go Green APU
This is where one of the best investments you can make right now comes in. An APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) like the Go Green APU lets you keep your A/C, heating, and all electrical systems running without idling your engine.
How much do you save? A truck idling burns between 0.8 and 1.5 gallons per hour. If you sleep 8 hours with the engine running, you're burning 6 to 12 gallons — that's $30 to $58 per night at today's prices. An APU uses a fraction of that.
At The Truck Savers™, we're authorized dealers and installers of Go Green APU. We install it, we finance it, and in just a few months it pays for itself. With diesel at these prices, the question isn't whether it's worth it — it's how much you're losing by not having one.
