Diesel Jumps 96¢ in One Week: National Average $4.86/Gallon

Attention truckers 🚛💰

Diesel prices jumped hard this week: the national average hit $4.86 per gallon on March 9, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

That's 96 cents higher than last week. And compared to March 2025, we're $1.27 higher.

Why Did Diesel Spike So Much?

The main reason: Middle East unrest. Regional conflicts have driven up crude oil prices, and that's reflected directly in diesel.

The EIA updated its 2026 projection on March 10:

  • 2026 annual average: $4.12/gallon (20.1% higher than their previous estimate)
  • Q2 2026 (April-June): $4.54/gallon
  • Second half of the year: Expected to gradually decrease

In other words, these high prices will last at least until mid-year.

Regional Prices (March 9, 2026)

Region Average Price
🌊 West Coast $5.55/gal
🏙️ East Coast $4.90/gal
🌾 Midwest $4.80/gal
🛢️ Gulf Coast $4.62/gal
⛰️ Rocky Mountain $4.39/gal

Extreme States

  • Most expensive: California — $6.15/gallon 💸
  • Cheapest: Montana — $4.03/gallon 💚

If you run California, you're paying $2.12 more per gallon than in Montana. On a 200-gallon tank, that's a $424 difference. Brutal.

What You Can Do to Save

When diesel is this expensive, every gallon you don't burn is money in your pocket:

1. Reduce Idling

Go Green APU (gogreenapu.com) eliminates overnight idling. Instead of burning 0.8 gallons/hour all night (8-10 hours), you use electricity.

Savings with diesel at $4.86:

  • 8 hours of idling = 6.4 gallons × $4.86 = $31.10 per night
  • One week (5 nights) = $155.50
  • One month = $622

An APU pays for itself in months, not years.

2. Preventive Maintenance

A poorly maintained truck burns more diesel:

  • Misaligned tires increase rolling resistance → higher consumption
  • Dragging brakes → higher consumption
  • Worn suspension → higher consumption
  • Dirty air filters → higher consumption

At The Truck Savers™ we perform free road simulator inspections that detect all these problems BEFORE they cost you money.

And with our professional alignment machine, we get your truck perfectly aligned to maximize tire life and reduce fuel consumption.

3. Plan Your Routes

Avoid California if you can — $6.15/gallon is unsustainable. If you must go, fill your tank in Arizona or Nevada before crossing.

Use apps like TruckSmart or GasBuddy to find the cheapest stations on your route.

What's Next

The EIA says prices should start dropping in the second half of 2026, but for now, prepare to pay more at the pump.

Meanwhile, optimize your operation:

  • Idling = enemy #1 → Go Green APU
  • Maintenance up to date → The Truck Savers (713) 455-5566
  • Smart planning → avoid expensive states

Every cent counts. 💪
