California Diesel Hits $7.22 Per Gallon: Fleets Turn to Electric Trucks

California diesel surged 44.7% in one month to $7.22/gallon. Fleets like Hight Logistics are ordering Tesla Semis and Volvo electrics because, with state incentives, they are now cheaper than diesel.

⛽ $7.22 Per Gallon — California Diesel Is Out of Control

Average on-highway diesel in California hit $7.219 per gallon on March 30 per EIA data. That is a 44.7% increase from March 2 when it was $4.99, and 55.6% higher than the $4.641 at the start of 2026.

Today, with WTI crude at $111.44 and Brent at $107.72, pump prices could climb even higher.

💥 What Caused This?

The crisis escalated after the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei, followed by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. Iran responded by blocking the Strait of Hormuz and attacking overseas energy infrastructure.

"Our fuel surcharge has gone up 20% in the last two weeks," said Rudy Diaz, CEO of Hight Logistics in Long Beach. "It hits small shippers especially... it is a domino effect."

🔋 Fleets Are Turning to Electric

At $7+ diesel, the math on electric trucks is starting to work — especially with California incentives:

• Hight Logistics (75 tractors): 26 EVs already (17 Volvo VNR Electric + 9 BYD), with 15 Tesla Semis on order for September
• Hunter Logistics LA (10 trucks): 1 Volvo EV, 5 Tesla Semis ordered for 2027
• Tesla Semi to offer standard (325 miles) and long-range (500 miles) versions
• Reno, Nevada plant can produce up to 50,000 units/year
