Daimler Adds Cummins Engines to 2027 Lineup: Freightliner and Western Star Get More Options
DTNA expands its 2027 engine portfolio with the new Cummins B6.7 gasoline engine, the X10 platform, and the redesigned X15, complementing Detroit Gen 6 to meet EPA 2027 standards.
π§ Daimler Expands 2027 Engine Options
Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) is expanding its 2027 powertrain portfolio. The OEM is adding several new Cummins engine options alongside Detroit's next-generation Gen 6 diesel platform across Freightliner and Western Star models.
The move broadens the range of engines available to fleets as the industry prepares for EPA 2027 emissions regulations.
π The Big News: Cummins B6.7 Octane (Gasoline)
The headline is the Cummins B6.7 Octane, a purpose-built 87-octane gasoline engine for the medium-duty segment. It will be available in the Freightliner M2 106.
Key Specs
- Power: Up to 300 HP
- Torque: 660 lb-ft
- Fuel: Regular 87-octane gasoline
- Efficiency: Up to 10% better than comparable gasoline engines
- Oil intervals: Up to 15,000 miles
Why It Matters
The B6.7 Octane eliminates the need for DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), active regenerations, and all diesel aftertreatment hardware. It uses a much simpler three-way catalyst. For medium-duty fleets tired of diesel aftertreatment headaches, this is a serious alternative.
"The B6.7 Octane provides fleets a commercial-grade gasoline solution built for tough duty cycles without increasing maintenance demands", said Jim Nebergall, Executive Director of Product and Market Strategy at Cummins.
Ordering open since the week of March 9, 2026. Production begins Q3 2026.
β‘ Cummins X10: Replaces the L9 and X12
The new Cummins X10 is a clean-sheet design that replaces both the Cummins L9 and X12.
Specs
- Medium-duty: Up to 380 HP
- Heavy-duty: Up to 450 HP
- 48-volt electrical system for rapid heating of emissions components during cold starts
The 48-volt system is a key innovation: it quickly heats emissions-control components during cold starts, reducing emissions and supporting EPA 2027 compliance.
ποΈ Redesigned Cummins X15
The proven Cummins X15 has been updated to meet 2027 emissions requirements while maintaining the durability and performance that have made it the most widely used engine in long-haul operations.
