Air Dryer Service: Keep the Right Cartridge Type
A replacement cartridge must match the air system. Before winter, document its type, service history and the truck maker’s requirements.

Before approving an air dryer service quote, identify the cartridge the truck actually requires. A line that says only “dryer filter” leaves an important specification unresolved: whether the system uses an oil-coalescing cartridge and what replacement is appropriate.
The winter guidance behind the check
In its September 2024 winter-preparation bulletin, Bendix explains that moisture can condense and freeze in an air system. It calls for an oil-coalescing cartridge to be replaced with the same filtration type, rather than substituting a standard cartridge. This is a seasonal review of existing manufacturer guidance, not a new 2026 recall or a service campaign.
Do not set the interval from a generic headline
Bendix's June 2024 inspection guide makes service timing dependent on air demand and the truck manufacturer's recommendations. It also treats moisture investigation as a system question: recent temperature changes, external air supply and installation details can be relevant. A photograph or a single observation does not establish which component needs replacing.
The practical purchase is therefore a documented service scope, not simply the least expensive cartridge with a familiar description. Ask the technician to identify the applicable service information before deciding on parts.
Put four items on the work order
- Truck identification and the air dryer model, confirmed by the service provider.
- The required cartridge type and the proposed replacement part number.
- The last recorded service date, mileage and the operating pattern used to set the next review.
- Any reported observations, the inspection requested and the technician's findings, recorded separately.
Leave with a useful maintenance record
Keep the approved work order and final invoice together. If the selected part differs from the one initially quoted, ask for the documented reason. Have the next review entered in the fleet's maintenance record using the applicable manufacturer guidance; this article does not assign a universal replacement interval.
This is a planning checklist for a conversation with a qualified service provider. It does not provide a disassembly procedure or clear a vehicle for operation. Its value is narrower and practical: the next service conversation starts with the correct system and a traceable parts decision.
