U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo, Texas, discovered 39 live pythons hidden inside a 2021 Peterbilt tractor heading to Mexico. The incident occurred on March 5 during outbound inspection operations.
The Driver Said He Had Nothing
When officers selected the tractor for inspection, the driver gave a negative declaration — meaning he stated he wasn't carrying any prohibited goods. Officers found all 39 snakes hidden inside the truck.
"The interception of live pythons at the World Trade Bridge highlights the vigilance and dedication of our CBP officers in enforcing laws that protect both our borders and our environment," said Port Director Alberto Flores, Laredo Port of Entry.
The Consequences
- Penalties: $34,824 in export violation fines
- Seizure: The tractor and trailer were confiscated by CBP
- Animals: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service took custody and transported the pythons to a controlled environment
- Investigation: The case remains under investigation by Fish & Wildlife and Homeland Security Investigations
Why This Matters for Truckers
Laredo is one of the busiest freight corridors between the U.S. and Mexico. Many drivers assume inspections only apply inbound (Mexico → USA), but outbound inspections are equally thorough. Exporting live reptiles from the U.S. to Mexico requires compliance with multiple federal and international regulations.
The takeaway: always know what you're hauling. If someone asks you to transport something suspicious, walk away. Losing your tractor, your trailer, and facing nearly $35,000 in fines isn't worth any load.
