The 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup is no ordinary electric truck. Its tri-motor configuration offers up to 1,000 horsepower, an independently tested 0-to-60-mph time of 3.3 seconds and a price that approached six figures when new. It also weighs close to five tons in some configurations, so a contractor, shop owner or light-fleet buyer has to evaluate it as a complete operating system—not simply as a very fast pickup.

That distinction matters now that the 2024 model is more likely to be evaluated as remaining inventory or a used vehicle than as a new launch. The badge and dramatic performance are easy to understand. The harder questions concern the exact battery, wheels, tires, towing rating, charging curve and the kind of route the truck will run every week.

One model name covers very different trucks

The 2024 lineup included dual-motor and tri-motor all-wheel-drive versions. The dual-motor setup was rated at 570 horsepower, while the tri-motor version reached 1,000 horsepower and added the Watts to Freedom launch mode. Those figures can make the three-motor truck sound like the automatic choice, but the work capability tells a more complicated story.

Maximum towing capacity reached 12,000 pounds with the 570-horsepower dual-motor powertrain. Three-motor versions were rated between 7,500 and 8,500 pounds, depending on configuration. That is an important reminder for anyone shopping by horsepower alone: the fastest version is not necessarily the version with the highest trailer rating. The door label, VIN-specific equipment and owner documentation should settle the question before a trailer is connected.

Every pickup version uses a crew cab and a five-foot bed. Height-adjustable air suspension and rear-wheel steering help manage the truck’s unusual proportions. The rear steering is especially relevant in parking areas and tight job sites, but it does not make the Hummer physically small. A buyer still needs to check garage height, parking-space width, charger access and whether a trailer can be positioned without blocking traffic.

Range depends on configuration and load

That result is not a promise for every truck or route, but it shows how trailer weight, speed, wind, temperature and elevation can change the day.

For a work route, plan from the loaded case rather than the empty dashboard estimate. Identify chargers that accept the truck-and-trailer combination, confirm operating hours and leave a second charging option within reach. A charger that is technically on the route may still be unusable if the parking layout requires unhitching or if another vehicle blocks the only pull-through space.

Peak charging speed is only part of the stop

The truck’s high-voltage architecture can support impressive DC fast-charging numbers. During one test, it briefly reached 287 kW. The average was much lower at 98 kW, however, and charging from 10 to 90 percent took more than two hours in that session. GMC also promoted the ability to add 100 miles in 10 minutes under favorable conditions, while the same independent evaluation needed roughly twice that time.

Both statements can be true because a peak is not an average. Battery temperature, starting state of charge, charger output and the truck’s charging curve all affect the stop. An operator should estimate dwell time from the portion of the battery normally used, not from the best number on a brochure. For a truck that must visit multiple customers in one day, twenty unexpected minutes at each stop can erase the advantage of quick acceleration.

Weight changes the maintenance conversation

Strong acceleration in a vehicle this heavy demands discipline. A measured stop from 70 mph required 211 feet, and repeated hard stops produced noticeable brake fade during testing. Regenerative braking helps in routine use, but it does not eliminate the friction brakes or the need to inspect them. Tires also carry a demanding combination of vehicle mass, torque and, in some versions, off-road tread.

Before putting a used Hummer EV Pickup into service, inspect tire load ratings, pressure, tread depth and wear across the full width. Check alignment if the inside or outside shoulders show a pattern.
